The Top 5 Skills Professionals need for High Performance
At the start of the year the Financial Times published research, expert commentary and leadership insights that identified the '5 essential skills to succeed'. The focus is on how individuals and leaders can keep themselves competitive and at the top of their game as businesses enter a new decade.
The five essentials skills identified are:
- Adaptability
- Creativity
- Emotional intelligence
- Tech
- Personal brand
Where does facilitation fit in?
Quite simply great facilitation skills help rapidly enhance at least 3 of the 5 Essential Skills above. When skills such as emotional intelligence and adaptability, previously dubbed 'soft skills', are being are being cited by the Financial Times as the critical skills to give professionals the competitive edge then it is very exciting to see how facilitation can make a massive difference to individuals and businesses.
Leading researchers have explored and explain why each will be important for professionals who want to stay ahead.
Adaptability
"Adaptability stands out as the most relevant skill for the 2020s," says leadership development researcher Jason Wingard, who carries out research into organisational strategy and the future of work. Facilitation teaches techniques that are effective, simple and that makes them easy to repeat and adapt to personal style. Facilitators are able to gain insights and identify tactics to adapt to varying personality types in order to achieve aims and get the desired results.
Creativity
"Creativity is always highly prized. Distil it into your own strategy . . . This should also make you helpful to your company," says Jason Wingard, and it will become one of the most in-demand skills that cuts across many sectors, from media to transport. Like adaptability, the expert facilitator can embrace and deliver creatively in particular using their skills for improved communication and engagement and being able to think flexibly and creatively where others are stuck.
Emotional intelligence
"Employers are looking for high emotional intelligence — the ability to communicate and collaborate," so there's no surprise to see how facilitation techniques that arm you with skills like collaboration and active listening where you are able to concentrate on what is being said, and also focus body language and other cues — will be hugely valuable. Facilitation gives people the ability to understand, engage and improve people dynamics. Facilitation training allows people to take away all the tools they need to become confident understanding people and group dynamics and adapting to get the results needed.
